What is UPF?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, which indicates how effectively a fabric blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays, offering built-in sun protection for your skin.
Why UV Protection Matters
UV rays can damage the DNA in skin, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and it increases the risk of skin cancer. Both UVA and UVB rays penetrate skin layers, causing cellular damage. American Cancer Society
What UPF Ratings Mean
UPF 15 blocks about 93% of UV rays, UPF 30 blocks about 97%, and UPF 50+ blocks 98% or more, which is among the highest standards of UPF. All Solora clothing will be UPF 50+ certified.
UPF versus SPF
SPF acts as traditional sunscreen. It wears off after about 2 hours, requires frequent reapplication, and it’s often easy to miss areas on one’s skin by mistake.
UPF is for fabric. It is always on, built into the garment, and provides full coverage.
How UPF Clothing Works
UPF protection comes from fabric density and weave structure, fiber type, color, and garment coverage. While some UPF fabrics are made from 100% plastic-based materials, Solora prioritizes fabrics made from more natural-based fibers with less plastic, offering UPF 50+ protection.
Not all clothing is UPF 50+. For example, basic white tee shirts often rate as low as UPF 5-10, allowing the UV rays to penetrate your skin.
